Youth Garden Is Growing
The 2nd Annual Youth Giveaway Garden is off and growing, thanks to the efforts of 17 youth and adult volunteers who gathered last Saturday to do some dirty work. This year’s edition of the garden is roughly 50 percent larger than last year’s. Tasks included digging up sod in the new area, tilling, enriching with mushroom soil, laying down cardboard for mulch, planting, watering, and more mushroom soil to top things off. Among other things, the garden includes several varieties of tomatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers, tomatillos, zucchinis, green beans, beets, and carrots.
Youth families will take turns watering and weeding, and produce will be shared with people from our community and congregation later this summer. Last year church members also brought produce from their own gardens to share with others. The idea for the garden germinated in Youth Director Linda Byers’ fertile mind last year when Covid-19 prevented indoor activities.
