Library Is Open for Business

The remodeled church library is open for business!

The library committee, comprised of Doreen Creighton, Floy Fitzkee, Gia Todaro, and Chrissy Wells, met recently and established some guidelines for using the library.

The library will be considered a “free borrowing” library, meaning you do not have to sign out a card and leave it behind to take a book. You may find a book you’d like to borrow, take it home to read, and then return it to the baskets on one of the shelves. A volunteer will reshelve the book properly. Easy-peasy!

This system was chosen because many church libraries who have the card system find that people tend to just borrow the book and return it without filling out a card anyway. So, we wanted to remove any guilt this may have caused some of us in the past. Our goal is to provide interesting books to readers and make it as easy as possible to take out a book.

New to the library will be a section devoted to our Hispanic brothers and sisters. We will be purchasing some books written in the Spanish language to meet the needs of this part of our church family. Additional English resources also will be added over time.

We also welcome donations of NEW books in pristine condition and will have a special shelf for them (please, no books older than five years). The committee will make sure all books are appropriate before shelving them. Please make sure donated books do not have underlining or highlighting on the pages. Both are distracting to readers. If interested in donating, talk to any committee member.

With the renovations, the library, which is located next to the Gathering Place, is now a more flexible space. Along with the books, the room can be used for meetings, small groups, counseling, and other service work of the church. You will see a new set of tables and chairs in the library specifically for this.

Many thanks to the library renovation committee of Doreen Creighton, Kathy Focht, Dave Hosler, Jeffrey Putt, and Wendy Young, along with other volunteers who assisted with the project. And many, MANY thanks to the Lancaster Brethren Preschool for funding the renovation!

So let’s get this party started—finally. And Happy Reading! – Doreen Creighton
